Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired
In the past my main focus has always been to lose weight. I have spent YEARS being obsessed with my weight! When I decided I was finally ready to lose the weight, I would do every trick under the book to lose it fast. I would try the current fad diets, I would over exercise, I would not eat enough, I would completely deprive myself of anything I enjoyed...and it worked...temporarily. After I lost the weight, I had a hard time keeping it off because I was unhealthy. I was tired and felt like crap!
Obviously I still want to lose weight, but more importantly I want a life. I want a life where I can go out with my kids and not feel exhausted after playing ball for 30 mins. Where I can walk my dogs and not be completely pooped afterwards. Where cooking supper isn't exhausting. I want a life without bloat and tummy troubles. Where I don't half way through the day feel so bloated that my pants are digging in. I want a life without swelling ankles. A life where food doesn't send me to the toilet. I have lived this life for a long time but I want a new life, a life of freedom, energy and feeling amazing.
My body has been "sick" for so long I don't even know what it wants or how it works anymore. I can't hear what my body is trying to tell me. The only thing I do know is my body does NOT like gluten. I am not celiac but I have a definite intolerance. Last year I went to see Dr. Kerri Dow, a naturopathic doctor here in Fredericton. She helped me pinpoint gluten as one of my triggers. When I eat a diet with gluten, it causes major fatigue, bloat, diarrhoea, dryness of the eyes and headaches. The problem is I take it out and then I need something of convenience cause I'm hungry and I eat it. It's a vicious cycle.
Part of this journey is learning to break the bad habits, to become in tune with my body again, to know what it needs when it needs it, to restore it back to a healthy body and live a life of not feeling sick and tired! I've started reading "Food and Healing" by Annemarie Colbin. I read the first 20 pages and she talks about how there are basics that can work for everyone across the board but not every diet works for everyone. She herself is vegan and she feels great on a spartan vegan diet. Her husband was eating vegan as well and started to feel sick and unwell. Long story short, he needed to add fish and chicken to his diet with a piece of steak every so often. Everyone is different and has different needs.
I'm determined and excited to learn what my needs are and what my body is actually saying.
